While playing the Stark sisters Sansa and Arya on “Game of Thrones,” Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner became close friends in real life. They are so close that there have even been rumors of a romance in the past due to their proximity.
Turner stated that she and Williams would tease the cast and crew of the show by attempting to kiss each other on site during her interview on Conan on Wednesday.
We fully knew about it [that people thought we were together], we played into it,” she remarks. “We did. So on the set we would kind of do the scene then try and kiss each other in the middle of the scene and see if anyone would react, and it’s Game of Thrones so incest is so normal that they were like, ‘all right, that’s fine.’ Yeah, it was probably the most tame thing that happened on the show, actually.”
Turner had a witty retort when O’Brien pushed whether they saw the rumors as a joke. “Yeah, you know, sometimes you just wanna make out with your best friend,” she states.
“Yeah, tell me about it,” O’Brien said in jest, gesturing to his partner Andy Richter.
In an interview with Glamour UK earlier this year, the two discussed the role they had in supporting one other’s mental health.
“I can’t tell you the amount of times Sophie said, ‘Go to therapy,’ before I actually did,” Williams started. “She really helped me through some messy break-ups and some friend break-ups. Whenever I’m like, ‘I need help! This is bigger than anything I can sort out on my own,’ Sophie is my point of call. I think therapy is so important. You should absolutely speak to someone, even if in your head you go, ‘Yeah, I knew that!’”
Turner affirmed Williams’ assertion and said, “We’ve helped each other through a lot of mental-health problems, especially around body image. She’s been my crutch in that, and I’ve been hers because it seems everything she goes through, I go through. You know when girls are together a long time, their periods sync up? It’s like our emotions and personalities sync up, too.”
Williams and Turner’s relationship has received plenty of attention over the years, and Turner recently revealed her desire to produce a film about it to her Dark Phoenix co-star Jessica Chastain.
The 23-year-old Turner expressed her desire to direct in a video for Vogue Paris.
“As an actor, you can only have so much creative control,” Turner said. “I want to be able to have full creative control and create my own vision and that’s something I’m quite passionate about.”
She later states, “My best friend Maisie, she and I have a very intense friendship, a friendship that I haven’t had with any of my other girlfriends before. We felt like we wanted to write a movie about a friendship where it’s kind of like you’re soulmates, but you’re friends and it’s like this beautiful connection but it can also be quite destructive.”
Turner is now on a promotional tour in support of her starring role in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which she co-stars in alongside Michael Fassbender and Jessica Chastain. The Louis Vuitton brand ambassador has been dishing out some spectacular looks during the tour, including a killer Paco Rabanne chain mail dress at the Chasing Happiness premiere in Los Angeles and a small LBD by Mugler in Paris.
Turner and Williams have been quite open about their connection, whether it be via work for Rolling Stone or jokes on the red carpet. Williams was even referred to by Turner as her “soul mate” in the past when she spoke to INSIDER.
